Travel Money Checklist: What to Sort Before a Holiday Abroad

Your first evening abroad should be about finding your accommodation and somewhere good to eat. Knowing how you will pay for the airport transfer, dinner and a few essentials makes that arrival easier, especially after a delayed flight.

Sorting your travel money starts with the holiday you have planned. A city break with prepaid attractions needs a different spending budget from a week of village markets, beach cafés and spontaneous day trips. Work out what remains to be paid, decide where cash will be useful and check your card charges before you leave.

Build Your Spending Budget Around Your Itinerary

Start with the bookings you have already made. Separate fully paid flights, accommodation and activities from reservations with a balance due on arrival. Then add meals, local transport, admission tickets and the little purchases you expect to make along the way.

Use current menus, transport fares and attraction websites to estimate costs. For a beach holiday, that might mean lunches outside the hotel and a boat trip. For a road trip, include parking, fuel and any tolls on your route. Leave room for an unexpected expense without treating the extra money as something you have to spend.

If you are still building the holiday fund, our guide to saving money for travel can help with the preparation. Once you have a spending budget, decide how much of it you actually need to carry in cash.

Work Out Where You Might Need Cash

There is no single cash allowance that suits every destination. Check payment information for your accommodation, transport and planned activities rather than assuming the whole country works the same way. Some businesses accept cards only, while others may need cash.

Think about denominations as well as the total. A mix of smaller notes can be more practical for modest purchases than a wallet full of large ones. Ask what is available when ordering currency, as particular denominations may not be guaranteed.

Arrange Currency Collection Before the Last-Minute Rush

Once you know which currency you need, compare collection and delivery options that fit your departure plans. Check availability early enough to leave time for an order, particularly if you need a currency that the bureau does not routinely hold.

For travellers in and around Ilkeston, TravelCash’s travel cash Ilkeston page lists a collection location at Cash Monkey on Bath Street. It is a local option to compare if you would prefer to collect currency before heading to the airport.

The provider says customers receive an SMS when their order is ready. Check the collection date, opening hours, identification requirements and accepted payment methods before travelling to the store. Leave yourself some flexibility rather than making currency collection the final errand before your flight.

Compare the Amount You Will Actually Receive

When comparing exchange quotes, use the same amount of pounds and check the final amount of foreign currency you would receive after all charges. Include delivery or collection costs where applicable. A commission-free offer can still have a less favourable exchange rate than another quote.

For example, if two providers charge £300 in total and one gives you €345 while the other gives you €351, the second leaves you with €6 more to spend. These are illustrative figures, not current exchange rates. Also check when a quoted rate becomes fixed and how long an order remains available for collection.

Check Your Cards Before You Pack Them

Read your card provider’s overseas charges for purchases and cash withdrawals separately, as they can differ. Check withdrawal limits too. Having a card ready for larger purchases and cash for selected smaller expenses gives you flexibility, provided those payment methods are accepted where you are going.

At a card terminal, you may be offered a choice between paying in pounds and the local currency. Choosing pounds can involve the merchant’s currency conversion. HSBC’s guidance on using cards abroad explains that paying in local currency avoids dynamic currency conversion fees and usually gives a better exchange rate. Your own card’s charges can still apply.

Before departure, make sure you can access your banking app and find your provider’s lost-card contact details. If you have a backup card, keep it separately from the one you use day to day.

Keep Arrival Essentials Within Reach

Keep your wallet and essential travel documents with you rather than in checked luggage. Carry only the cash you expect to need for an outing in your everyday wallet, with the remainder stored securely. Avoid keeping every payment option in the same pouch.

Our guide to organising your carry-on can help you keep tickets, chargers and arrival essentials easy to find. Download booking details before travelling so you can check what is prepaid even when you have no connection.

Leave Enough for the Last Day

Before spending your remaining cash on souvenirs, account for the trip back to the airport and any costs you have not settled. If you return with unused notes, compare the buyback quote with keeping them for a trip you already have planned. Do not assume you will receive the same rate you paid.

You also do not need to empty your wallet in the departure lounge. Our guide to duty-free shopping and when it saves money explains what to compare before buying. Leave the airport with something you wanted, rather than something you bought simply to use up your change.
