A southern Vietnam holiday can give you two quite different trips in one: coffee stops and city evenings in Ho Chi Minh City, followed by slower days beside the sea on Phu Quoc. For a honeymoon or a break together, that contrast leaves room for exploring without moving hotels every other night.
This suggested eight-day itinerary uses two bases, with three nights in the city and four on the island. Add more beach time if you can, or an extra night before your international flight if the connections make that sensible. For ideas beyond this route, our Vietnam travel guide covers other places to consider.

Southern Vietnam Itinerary at a Glance
| Day | Base | Suggested plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ho Chi Minh City | Arrive, settle in and have dinner near your hotel. |
| 2 | Ho Chi Minh City | Explore central sights and cafés, with a rooftop drink or dinner in the evening. |
| 3 | Ho Chi Minh City | Choose a food walk or cultural outing, then an optional Saigon River cruise. |
| 4 | Phu Quoc | Fly to the island, transfer to your accommodation and keep the afternoon free. |
| 5 | Phu Quoc | Enjoy a beach or pool day, with an optional spa appointment. |
| 6 | Phu Quoc | Visit a fish sauce producer or pepper farm, then choose a night market for dinner. |
| 7 | Phu Quoc | Take a weather-dependent nature or boat outing, or leave the day unplanned. |
| 8 | Departure | Travel onward, allowing enough time for any connecting flight. |
Treat the activities as suggestions rather than a booking checklist. Keep any boat trip flexible so you can swap it with a beach day if conditions change.
When to Plan a Southern Vietnam Honeymoon
December to April is a useful starting point for this route. Ho Chi Minh City generally has drier weather during these months, and Phu Quoc is a popular winter beach destination. The official Vietnam weather and climate guide helps explain the differences between regions.
Dry season still means tropical heat, humidity and the possibility of showers. Plan city walks for earlier in the day, leave room for an indoor break and avoid making a particular sunset the centrepiece of your trip.
If your dates overlap with Tet, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year holiday, check domestic flights, accommodation and individual venue opening arrangements early.
Days 1–3: Coffee, City Walks and Evenings in Ho Chi Minh City
Give your arrival day some breathing room. After a long flight, a shower, a short walk and dinner nearby may be more enjoyable than rushing to a prepaid activity.
For your first full day, choose a few central sights rather than trying to cross the whole city. The Central Post Office and Nguyen Hue walking street can form part of a city outing, with café stops between them. A guided food walk is another way to explore together without planning every meal yourself.
Save one evening for a rooftop venue or a Saigon River cruise. Check the departure time, boarding point, menu and cancellation terms before booking a cruise. A dinner sailing may take place after dark, so confirm the timing if sunset views are what you want.
For rooftop drinks or dinner, ask about reservations and dress requirements at your chosen venue. A table with a view can be a lovely occasion, but there is no need to turn every evening into an elaborate booking.
Day 4: Fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc
Direct flights connect Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City with Phu Quoc International Airport. Vietnam Airlines lists the flight time at about one hour, but transfers, check-in and baggage collection make this a substantial part of the day.
Compare flights for your actual dates and check the baggage allowance, particularly if your international ticket includes more luggage than the domestic fare. Give yourself time to reach the airport and confirm your island transfer before arriving.
If you return through Ho Chi Minh City for an international flight, allow a generous connection buffer. Separate tickets can leave you responsible for a missed onward flight, so an overnight stay may be worth considering.
Check Entry Requirements for Both Stops
Phu Quoc’s special visa exemption does not cover sightseeing in Ho Chi Minh City. The island has a conditional exemption for stays of up to 30 days, but this itinerary includes a mainland visit.
Before booking, check whether your passport qualifies for a visa exemption covering mainland Vietnam or whether you need a visa. Use Vietnam’s official e-visa portal if applying online, and confirm the current requirements for your route. Airport transit arrangements should not be treated as permission to spend several days in the city.
Choose a Phu Quoc Base That Fits Your Plans
Start with the location. Check the journey to restaurants, excursions and the airport, then decide how much time you expect to spend at the property. A secluded setting and an easy walk to dinner are different priorities.
When comparing Phu Quoc luxury resorts, La Veranda Resort Phu Quoc is one option to consider. The beachfront property describes its design as inspired by a French colonial mansion, with tropical gardens, restaurants and a wellness offering. Check the specific room category before booking, since garden and ocean-facing options offer different outlooks.
For a honeymoon, ask what any celebration package includes and whether dining or spa arrangements require advance reservations. Compare the full rate, including breakfast, transfers and cancellation terms, rather than choosing from photographs alone.
Days 5–7: Mix Beach Time with Local Experiences
Keep your first full island day light. Have a slow breakfast, spend time by the beach or pool and decide whether you want an excursion the following day. Leave at least one day without a fixed plan.
Phu Quoc is known for fish sauce and pepper. A visit to a producer can add something different to the beach portion of your trip. Ask whether tours are available, what they involve and whether you need to arrange them ahead. There is no need to fit several producers into the same afternoon.
For a nature outing, remember that Phu Quoc forms part of a much larger conservation landscape. UNESCO’s Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve profile describes forests, marine areas, coral reefs and seagrass habitats across the wider reserve. That designation does not mean every part of the island is a protected visitor attraction.
If booking a snorkelling or boat trip, confirm the route, safety equipment, weather cancellation policy and suitability for your swimming ability. Avoid touching coral or disturbing wildlife, and be prepared to change plans if sea conditions are poor.

Choose an Evening Market Without Rushing Across the Island
Duong Dong’s night market is an option for browsing food stalls and trying local dishes. VUI-Fest Bazaar in Sunset Town offers another setting, with shopping, food and entertainment. Choose the one that fits your day’s route rather than attempting both in one evening.
Check current opening and entertainment schedules instead of relying on a fixed island-wide timetable. Arrange your return transport, confirm prices before ordering and allow time to enjoy dinner without watching the clock.
Pack for City Walks and Beach Days
Bring comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, lightweight clothing, sun protection and a light rain layer. A small bag for wet swimwear is useful when moving between the island and the airport. Our beach packing list can help you check the basics without filling your suitcase with things the hotel already supplies.
Keep flights, transfers and accommodation details together, especially if bookings are split between providers. Our trip planning guide and spreadsheet can help organise the practical details.
The appeal of this route is its change of pace. Start with a few city experiences, then give the island enough time for both outings and lazy afternoons. A honeymoon does not need a special activity every day to feel special.
