If you’re planning a trip to the North Georgia mountains in fall, timing is the whole game. Georgia State Parks’ Leaf Watch tips say the state’s mountain parks peak toward the end of October in most years, with colour carrying on at lower elevations into early November.

This guide covers when to go, the best scenic drive and five hikes compared, where to stay for an evening soak, and the food, festivals and packing that round out an autumn (fall) weekend around Helen.

When Is Peak Fall Color in the North Georgia Mountains?

Late October is the safe bet, with the highest ridges turning first. Black Rock Mountain State Park, at 3,640 feet, is usually one of the first parks to show strong colour on the Georgia State Parks Leaf Watch page. The Georgia Forestry Commission also publishes weekly Leaf Watch reports through the season, so check both the week before you travel.

No one can promise a peak date: warm, dry spells and early frosts shift it by a week or more. If you can stay flexible by a day or two, do. If you can’t, book for the last week of October and treat anything better as a bonus.

The Best Scenic Drive: Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway

The Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway (GA 348) is the drive to do if you only do one. It runs about 14 miles through the Chattahoochee National Forest between the Helen area and the Blairsville side of the mountains, and it forms part of the 40-mile Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway loop.

The big stop is Hogpen Gap, the high point of the road at roughly 3,480 feet, with a car park and layered ridge views. It’s also where the Appalachian Trail crosses the highway, so you can walk a short stretch of it without committing to the other 2,000-odd miles to Maine. Our Appalachian Trail explainer covers what the full route involves.

Watch out for: steep grades, tight bends and patchy phone signal. Download your map before you leave Helen.

Add Brasstown Bald for the Four-State View

Brasstown Bald is Georgia’s highest point at 4,784 feet, and on a clear day the observation deck looks across Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Forest Service’s Brasstown Bald visitor centre page lists the summit trail as a steep, paved 0.6 miles, with a shuttle as the alternative, and admission at $8 per person aged 16 and over, shuttle included.

It’s worth it on a clear day. On a grey one, check the Forest Service webcam on that page first: you’ll pay the same to stand inside a cloud.

Raven Cliff Falls is the classic. The trail follows Dodd Creek past smaller cascades to a falls that drops through a crack in a granite cliff. The Recreation.gov listing for the Raven’s Cliff Wilderness Trailhead pass puts it at 2.6 miles each way, and the trailhead sits on GA 348, so it pairs neatly with the scenic drive.

Dukes Creek Falls, a few miles away, is the shorter option. The Forest Service Dukes Creek Falls page lists a $4 daily vehicle fee, payable by card or through the Recreation.gov app. The walk down is easy; the stairs back up are where the effort lives.

Yonah Mountain, between Cleveland and Helen, is a short, steep climb to bare rock and wide views. Budget three to four hours, and expect a bumpy gravel forest road to the trailhead.

The Smith Creek Trail links Unicoi State Park with Anna Ruby Falls. It isn’t the flat option it’s sometimes sold as: the Unicoi trail map rates it strenuous at 4.8 miles each way. If you only want one direction, start at the Anna Ruby Falls end and walk mostly downhill to Unicoi, with a car waiting.

Distances are round trip unless stated. Fees checked November 2026 against the USDA Forest Service and Recreation.gov; Smith Creek distance from the Unicoi State Park trail map. Walking times are rough guides, so allow extra for photo stops. Brasstown Bald entry is $8 per person aged 16 and over, shuttle included; under-16s go free.

Watch out for: wet rock around every waterfall. Stay on the trail and off the ledges, however good the photo looks. If you want to compare trails in another autumn hotspot further up the Appalachians, our guide to Shenandoah National Park hikes compared by difficulty uses the same approach.

Where to Stay: Cabins With Hot Tubs for Cold Nights

Days can feel like summer and nights don’t. Helen’s October climate normals (1991 to 2020) put the average high at about 71°F (22°C) and the average low at about 46°F (8°C), and the ridges run colder than the valley. November nights are colder again.

That gap is why so many people book a cabin rather than a hotel room. A local list of hot tub cabins tucked into the hills around Helen is a useful starting point if an outdoor soak after a hike is the plan. Before you book, check the listing for the hot tub’s location, how private it is, whether the driveway is steep or gravel, and whether there’s a fire pit.

For hotels, inns and other rentals, use the map below to compare places to stay around Helen by price and location.

Hot Tub and Fire Pit Safety

This is general safety information, not medical advice. The CDC’s advice on staying healthy in hot tubs says water shouldn’t be hotter than 104°F (40°C), and to skip alcohol before or during a soak. It also advises that children under five stay out, and that anyone pregnant speaks to a healthcare provider first.

For the fire pit, buy firewood locally rather than bringing it from home. The Don’t Move Firewood summary for Georgia sets out the Georgia Forestry Commission’s advice not to move firewood out of the county it came from, because it can carry tree-killing pests. Check the cabin’s rules too: some ban fires during dry spells.

Food, Festivals and Small Towns

Bavarian-style shopfronts and clock tower on the main street in Helen, Georgia, with Oktoberfest banners on the lampposts

Helen is a Bavarian-themed mountain town, and its Oktoberfest at the Festhalle is the main event. The Helen Chamber’s Oktoberfest 2026 page lists Thursday to Sunday sessions through September and nightly sessions from 1 October to 1 November. Great if you want beer, brats and oompah bands; skip Helen at weekend night-time if you came for quiet.

For a calmer evening, drive the few miles to Sautee Nacoochee or Clarkesville, where the pace drops and the shops and galleries are small and local. Roadside stands along the way often sell cider, honey and apples in season, no planning required.

Ellijay, roughly 90 minutes’ drive west of Helen, is Georgia’s apple country. Its 2026 Georgia Apple Festival ran over the second and third weekends of October (10 to 11 and 17 to 18 October), and the orchards around town sell apples well beyond festival weekends.

What to Pack for North Georgia in Fall

Pack for two seasons in one day. A T-shirt for sunny afternoons, a warm mid-layer and a waterproof shell cover most October days, and a hat and gloves earn their space for evenings outside or a sunrise at Brasstown Bald.

  • Broken-in trail shoes with decent grip for wet rock at the waterfalls
  • Cash and the Recreation.gov app for trailhead fees where signal is patchy
  • A head torch, because daylight runs out fast and cabin paths are rarely lit
  • Swimwear and a warm robe or jacket for the walk between the hot tub and the door

Book early for peak weekends. Weeknights usually mean more choice, lower rates and quieter trails, so if you can stretch the trip into a Monday or Tuesday, it’s the easiest upgrade going.

North Georgia Mountains in Fall: FAQ

When do the leaves change in the North Georgia mountains?

Colour starts on the highest ridges in early to mid October, and Georgia State Parks says the mountain parks usually peak toward the end of October. Lower elevations keep their colour into early November. Weather shifts the timing every year, so check the Leaf Watch reports the week before you go.

How cold does it get in Helen, Georgia in October?

Helen’s 1991 to 2020 normals put the average October low at about 46°F (8°C), with highs around 71°F (22°C). Higher ridges such as Hogpen Gap and Brasstown Bald run colder, and nights get noticeably colder into November. Pack a warm layer for evenings.

Is the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway worth driving?

Yes, especially in late October. It’s about 14 miles long, takes in Hogpen Gap and the Raven Cliff Falls trailhead, and links up with Brasstown Bald for a half-day loop. Take it slowly: the grades are steep, the bends are tight and phone signal is unreliable.

What is the easiest waterfall hike near Helen?

Dukes Creek Falls is the shortest of the well-known waterfall walks, at about 2.5 miles round trip, with a $4 parking fee per vehicle. The way down is easy, but the stairs on the return are a workout, so give yourself time and take water.
