Amtrak is moving closer to launching a new era of rail travel in the Pacific Northwest as the first next-generation Amtrak Cascades trainset arrives in Seattle for final testing before passenger service begins later this year.
The sleek new trains are part of Amtrak’s nationwide Airo fleet rollout, a major modernization project designed to improve comfort, accessibility, and reliability for travelers across the United States. For Cascades riders, the arrival signals a noticeable upgrade for journeys linking cities including Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, B.C., and Eugene.
A Major Milestone for Pacific Northwest Rail Travel
The first Cascades Airo trainset has now completed two earlier testing phases and entered the final stage of preparation in the Pacific Northwest.
The process started in Pueblo, Colorado, where engineers tested the train’s core operating systems on a dedicated rail testing track. From there, the train moved to the Northeast Corridor, allowing Amtrak crews to evaluate performance on active rail lines before sending the train west.
Now in Washington state, the train will undergo route familiarization, operational checks, crew training, and practice runs along the Amtrak Cascades corridor before travelers are welcomed onboard.
The new trainsets are expected to gradually replace older equipment currently used on the route, bringing a more modern onboard experience to one of the country’s most scenic rail journeys.

What Travelers Can Expect Onboard
Amtrak says the new Cascades trains were designed with passenger comfort and accessibility in mind. Riders can expect upgraded interiors, modern seating, improved accessibility features, and food and beverage offerings inspired by the Pacific Northwest.
The trains are also being designed to create a smoother and more reliable travel experience while supporting Amtrak’s broader effort to modernize rail infrastructure nationwide.
For travelers exploring the Pacific Northwest, the upgrades could make rail an even more appealing alternative to driving or short regional flights.
Part of a Nationwide Expansion
The Seattle arrival represents more than just a regional milestone. The trainset is the first of eight planned for the Amtrak Cascades fleet and part of a larger order of 83 Airo trainsets that will be introduced across the country.
Amtrak has described the project as its largest fleet modernization initiative to date, with the new trains intended to support growing demand for passenger rail travel in the years ahead.
The rollout also reflects increased investment in rail infrastructure and American manufacturing as Amtrak works to refresh aging equipment on several major routes.
Why the Cascades Route Is Popular With Travelers
The Amtrak Cascades route is widely considered one of North America’s most scenic rail corridors. Travelers pass through coastal landscapes, evergreen forests, mountain views, and waterfront cityscapes while connecting some of the Pacific Northwest’s most visited destinations.
Popular stops along the line include Seattle, Portland, Tacoma, Everett, Bellingham, Vancouver, B.C., and Eugene. The service is especially popular with visitors looking for a slower, more scenic alternative to interstate driving.
With the new trains expected to enter service later this year, travelers planning Pacific Northwest trips may soon have a more modern way to experience the region by rail.
