Commuters across New Jersey could soon notice cleaner stations, faster travel updates, upgraded security, and a redesigned mobile app as NJ TRANSIT rolls out a new statewide improvement strategy aimed at fixing some of the biggest frustrations riders face every day.
Governor Mikie Sherrill announced the agency’s new “Rapid Action Plan” this week, describing it as an effort to quickly modernize the rider experience without adding new costs to the state budget. The plan focuses on four major areas that affect daily travel: digital tools, cleanliness, accessibility, and public safety.
For travelers using trains, buses, or light rail services between New Jersey, New York City, and Philadelphia, the changes are designed to improve both convenience and reliability in the near term while larger infrastructure projects continue in the background.
A New NJ TRANSIT App Is Coming
One of the most noticeable changes for riders will be the launch of a redesigned NJ TRANSIT mobile app. State officials say the updated app is being accelerated after customer complaints about outdated trip planning tools and inconsistent service information.
The transit agency also plans to improve real-time travel tracking through a new GPS-powered platform called NJT LiveView. The system is expected to deliver more accurate train and light rail arrival times, service alerts, and live updates across station displays, mobile devices, and third-party apps.
Additional digital upgrades include:
- Expanded Wi-Fi access on buses
- Improvements to MyBus and MyLightRail tracking tools
- A redesigned customer-focused website
- Modernized digital screens and station displays
- A unified communication system for travel alerts and updates
For commuters who regularly deal with delays or changing schedules, the state says the goal is to make travel information easier to access and more reliable across the entire network.

Cleaner Stations and Vehicles
Another major focus of the plan is improving station and vehicle conditions. NJ TRANSIT says it will expand cleaning programs across both rail and bus fleets while targeting busy stations and high-traffic areas first.
The agency will also introduce rotating station care teams to improve maintenance at smaller or outlying stations that often receive less attention.
Travelers could begin seeing faster cosmetic improvements at stations and stops before longer-term maintenance programs are fully implemented statewide.
Accessibility Improvements Planned
The Rapid Action Plan also prioritizes upgrades aimed at making the transit system easier to navigate for passengers with disabilities and mobility challenges.
Planned accessibility initiatives include:
- Repairs and reliability improvements for elevators and escalators
- Updated signage and station wayfinding
- Expanded navigation tools for visually impaired passengers
- Improvements to boarding areas at transit facilities
Officials say initial work will focus on priority locations before expanding to more stations across the network.
Security and Safety Measures Expanding
NJ TRANSIT is also increasing investment in station safety through upgraded lighting, expanded surveillance systems, and the creation of a new Real Time Crime Center designed to improve coordination between transit operations and law enforcement.
The agency says the upgrades are intended to improve visibility and response times across stations and transit facilities statewide.
No New State Funding Included
According to state officials, the Rapid Action Plan will be funded through NJ TRANSIT’s existing budget rather than through additional state spending during the 2027 budget cycle.
The strategy was developed after public listening sessions, rider surveys, and feedback gathered by NJ TRANSIT’s customer advocacy office.
The improvements arrive as the agency continues work on several long-term transit projects, including the Portal North Bridge replacement and the delivery of hundreds of new railcars and buses expected to modernize the fleet over the coming years.
NJ TRANSIT remains the largest statewide public transportation system in the United States, handling more than 925,000 weekday trips across commuter rail, bus, light rail, and paratransit services connecting New Jersey with nearby major cities.
