Turkey eSIM Block: Which eSIMs Still Work in Turkey Heading Into 2027

Turkey eSIM Block Which eSIMs Still Work in Turkey Heading Into 2027 | Turkey eSIM Block: Which eSIMs Still Work in Turkey Heading Into 2027

If you’re heading to Istanbul, Cappadocia or Antalya this winter, a Turkey eSIM still works, but where you buy it now matters. In July 2025 Turkey’s telecoms regulator blocked access to at least 35 international eSIM sellers’ sites and apps, so the shop you used last time may not open once you land.

Here’s what the block does and doesn’t affect, what to check before you fly, how to install your plan at home, and how much data a typical holiday needs.

Quick Answer: Does an eSIM Still Work in Turkey?

Yes. Turkey restricted access to certain sellers, and eSIM technology itself still works. The UK Foreign Office simply says access to some e-sim services is restricted in Turkey and tells you to check with your provider before travelling.

The risk sits after arrival. Buying more data, topping up or reaching support through a blocked seller’s app can fail from a Turkish connection, so the plan you install at home needs to be big enough, or come from a seller you can still reach in Turkey. This was checked in November 2026; rules change, so look again a week before you go.

What Changed for eSIM Sellers in Turkey?

Turkey’s Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) issued two blocking rulings, on 10 July and 17 July 2025. By 21 July the list identified by Turkish digital rights group EngelliWeb ran to at least 35 storefronts, including several of the best-known travel eSIM brands. The legal basis for the rulings wasn’t published.

The shop is shut, but the phone signal carries on. Here’s what that looks like on the ground:

What a blocked eSIM seller means once you land in Turkey

Four things you might need from your eSIM, and how a blocked seller affects each one.

Data on a plan installed before you fly

Unaffected

The block targets the seller’s website and app, not the network your plan connects to.

Buying a new plan from inside Turkey

May fail

A blocked seller’s checkout may not load on a Turkish connection.

Topping up or extending your plan

May fail

Top-ups usually run through the same app, so they go down with it.

Reaching customer support

May fail

In-app chat goes with the app. Save a support email before you leave.

Buy enough data at home, or buy from a seller you can still reach in Turkey.

  1. Install the plan on home Wi-Fi before you fly.
  2. Buy more data than you think you need for the whole trip.
  3. Save the QR code, order reference and support email offline.

How to Choose a Turkey eSIM That Keeps Working After You Land

Any valid plan installed before arrival can supply data, even from a blocked seller. The difference is what you can still do from a Turkish connection. Before paying, check these in order:

  1. Your phone first, because it must support eSIM and be unlocked for other networks. Ask your UK network if you’re not sure.
  2. Turkey coverage, because some Europe-wide packages leave it out. Check Turkey is named in the destination list.
  3. When the clock starts, because validity can begin at installation, activation or first connection.
  4. Whether checkout, top-ups and support work from Turkey, because that decides whether a small plan is a sensible start or a gamble.

eSIM Prime is one provider that says its website and app stay accessible from inside Turkey. Its eSIM Turkey plans run on Vodafone and Türk Telekom and, when checked in November 2026, started at $2.99 for 1GB over seven days, up to 50GB over 60 days. The product page says plans include hotspot use, can be topped up, and activate when you reach Turkey or 90 days after purchase. The brand is offering Two Scots Abroad readers 10% off with the code TWOSCOTS10.

Whichever seller you pick, don’t rely on buying after you land. If checkout won’t load at the airport, your fallback is your UK network’s roaming rate for Turkey, so look that price up before you leave.

How to Install Your eSIM Before You Fly

Installing at home takes a few minutes and means you land with data ready to go. The steps vary slightly by phone:

  1. Buy the plan on reliable Wi-Fi a few days before departure.
  2. Scan the QR code from the confirmation email, or use the provider’s install button. On iPhone this sits in Settings under Mobile Service; on Android look for SIM manager under Connections or Network.
  3. Label the new line clearly, for example “Turkey data”, so you don’t mix it up with your UK SIM.
  4. On arrival, set the travel line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
  5. Keep data roaming switched off on your UK line so you’re not charged twice.

Your UK number stays live for calls and texts on a dual-SIM phone, which matters for bank security codes. If your winter trip also takes in a few days in London or Edinburgh, a separate eSIM UK plan covers that leg for readers who don’t have a UK SIM.

How Much Data Do You Need for a Turkey Holiday?

These are planning estimates, not measurements. Start from your phone’s usage settings at home, then add maps, photo uploads and video calls. Because topping up can be the weak point, round up rather than down.

Staying Connected in Istanbul, Cappadocia and Antalya in Winter

A nationwide plan covers all three, but each trip has its own pinch points. Our Turkey and Cappadocia travel guides cover the trip itself; here’s the phone side.

For the journey home after the fireworks, the FCDO advises you to use a registered taxi, note its registration number and make sure the fare is metered, and to avoid any demonstrations. Keeping copies of bookings off your phone’s data connection helps too, and our guide to sorting travel documents and offline copies walks through how.

Does the 120-Day IMEI Rule Affect Holidaymakers?

Not on a normal holiday. Turkey’s phone registration rule is separate from the eSIM block: a phone brought into the country must be registered within 120 days of your last entry or it’s blocked from Turkish networks, and registration carries a hefty fee. Anyone planning a long stay, a season of work or a semester should read up before going.

FAQ: Using an eSIM in Turkey

Is eSIM banned in Turkey?

No. Turkey blocked access to certain sellers’ websites and apps in July 2025. eSIM technology itself still works, and installed plans can still connect.

What is an eSIM and how does it work?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into compatible phones. You download a plan by scanning a QR code, then choose that line for mobile data, without removing your UK SIM.

Can I keep my UK number while using a travel eSIM?

Yes, on a dual-SIM phone. Your UK line handles calls and texts while the travel eSIM handles data. Keep data roaming off on the UK line.

Can I use my Turkey eSIM as a hotspot?

Many plans allow it, but not all. Check the plan details before buying if you need to share data with a laptop.

When should I buy my eSIM for Turkey?

A few days before you fly. Buy and install your eSIM for Turkey on home Wi-Fi, check when its validity starts, and save the QR code and support details offline in case you need help after you land.
