If you have just landed at Cancun International Airport and need to get to Tulum or Playa del Carmen, you have more choice than the taxi desks at arrivals let on. The cheapest direct way from Cancun to Tulum is the ADO bus, at roughly US$15 to $25 per person for a ride of about two and a half hours, while private transfers and taxis are priced per vehicle.

This guide compares ADO buses, colectivos, the Tren Maya and private transfers on cost, time and comfort, shows how the sums change for groups and families, and finishes with which option suits which kind of trip.

Quick Answer: Cancun to Tulum and Playa del Carmen

For most solo travellers and couples, the ADO bus from the airport is the easy win. Groups of three or four, and anyone with car seats to sort, should price a private transfer before defaulting to the bus. Prices below are typical ranges in US dollars, checked October 2026.

How Do You Get From Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen and Tulum by ADO Bus?

ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) runs air-conditioned coaches with reclining seats, a toilet and a luggage hold straight from the airport terminals. Buy your ticket at the ADO counter in arrivals or on ADO’s website or app, then walk out to the bus stop just outside the terminal. Most international flights land at Terminal 3 or 4, and a free shuttle links the terminals if you come out at the wrong one.

The ADO fare from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen is about 232 pesos for a ride of one to one and a half hours, ending at the central ADO terminal a few minutes’ walk from 5th Avenue. The Tulum run takes about two and a half hours and finishes at the ADO station on the main avenue in town.

Good to know: buses to Tulum leave every hour or two through the day and thin out late at night, so check the last departure before you book a late flight. Tickets can sell out at busy times, and buying online the night before saves a queue when you are tired and sweaty.

The bus is the sensible call if you are on your own or travelling as a pair, you have proper suitcases, and you are happy to take a short taxi from the bus station to your hotel. The downside is that last stretch: the bus drops you in town, and a beach hotel or Airbnb outside the centre means another fare.

Playa del Carmen to Tulum by Colectivo: Cheap, Cramped and Handy for Cenotes

Colectivos are shared white vans that run up and down Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Locals use them to get to work, so they stop wherever someone flags them down. You pay the driver in cash pesos when you get on; there are no advance tickets.

In Playa del Carmen, colectivos to Tulum mostly leave from Avenida Benito Juárez, cost roughly 40 to 100 pesos depending on where you get on and off, and take about an hour (closer to 90 minutes with a lot of stops). They leave when they fill up, and another one is usually along within minutes. Those fares date from March 2025, so carry a few small notes in case they have crept up.

The real perk is hopping off along the way. Tell the driver which cenote you want, such as Dos Ojos or Cenote Azul, and you will be dropped at the entrance on the highway. When you are done, stand on the roadside and flag the next van heading your way. Akumal is on the same stretch, and it features in our guide to the best places to swim with turtles.

Watch out for the trade-offs. Vans can be packed, the music is often loud, and there is very little room for luggage, so colectivos suit backpackers and day-trippers with small bags. Colectivos do not run from the airport, so you need to reach Playa del Carmen first.

Is the Tren Maya Worth It Between Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum?

The Tren Maya is the newest option on this coast, with stations at Cancun Airport, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The Tren Maya tourist-class fare for foreign visitors is 232 pesos from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and 246 pesos from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, as of October 2026.

The catch is the timetable. When the Tren Maya’s Cancun to Playa del Carmen service restarted on 15 August 2026, it ran just two morning trains in each direction. Check the current times and where the station sits in relation to your hotel before you plan an arrival around it; the bus is far more flexible for most flights.

When Does a Private Transfer From Cancun Airport Make Sense?

A private transfer costs the most for one person and starts to look very reasonable once three or four of you split it. You are met in arrivals by a driver holding a name sign, your bags go straight into the vehicle, and nobody else gets picked up on the way, so you go directly to your hotel or rental.

If that sounds like your kind of arrival after a long-haul flight, compare a few operators’ quotes for Private Transportation from Cancun Airport and check exactly what is included. A fixed per-vehicle price that covers tolls and waiting time is easier to budget for than a cheap headline rate with extras bolted on.

How the Sums Work for Groups

Private transfers to Playa del Carmen typically run $50 to $80 for the vehicle. Split four ways, that is $13 to $20 each, only a few dollars more than an ADO seat and with no taxi needed at the other end. A shuttle from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen booked for the whole group works the same way, so get the per-vehicle price and divide it yourself.

Tulum is further, so the vehicle price climbs to roughly $90 to $160. Four people sharing pay about $23 to $40 each, against $15 to $25 each on the bus. For a family hauling a pushchair and three suitcases, those extra few dollars buy a lot of patience.

How to Choose a Cancun Airport Transfer Company

Book with an established company and get the price in writing before you travel. Several operators cover the same routes with cars for couples and larger vans for groups, so it pays to compare like for like.

Cancun Airport Transfers is one option to check. It advertises private, non-stop rides and larger vans for families and groups with luggage. Run any company you are considering through the same checks:

  1. Confirm the price is per vehicle and covers your full group and bags, because a sedan quote will not stretch to five people and their suitcases.
  2. Ask whether they track your flight and how long the driver will wait if you are delayed, because immigration queues at Cancun can be slow.
  3. Request child seats when you book and ask whether they cost extra, since availability varies by operator.
  4. Check the meeting point for your terminal, so you walk past the sales desks inside arrivals without stopping.

If you land with nothing booked, use the authorised taxi booth inside arrivals and agree the fare before you get in. Uber pickups at the airport are restricted and unreliable, so do not count on one.

Can You Fly Into Tulum Airport?

Yes, if a flight works for you. Tulum International Airport (TQO) opened on 1 December 2023, south of town, and the ADO coach from Tulum airport into town takes roughly half an hour to Avenida Tulum. Colectivos do not serve this airport either. If Cancun fares are cheaper, though, the bus or a shared transfer down the coast is a perfectly decent fallback.

Cancun to Tulum or Playa del Carmen: Which Option Suits Your Trip?

  • Solo travellers and couples: take the ADO bus. It is cheap, comfortable and has room for big bags.
  • Backpackers on a tight budget: bus to Playa del Carmen, then use colectivos for Tulum and the cenotes in between.
  • Groups of three or more and families: price a private transfer first. Split per vehicle, it often costs only a little more than the bus and saves a taxi at the end.
  • All-inclusive guests: the big resorts sit on the coast between Playa and Tulum, away from the bus stations, so a transfer to the door makes the most sense. Our Bahia Principe Riviera Maya review covers one of those resort complexes.
