If you’re planning a road trip down the NSW South Coast, timing decides whether you get an empty beach or a queue for the car park. Spring is the sweet spot, as long as you dodge the school breaks: NSW summer school holidays run from 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027, and that’s when the coast fills up.
Below, you’ll find which weeks are quietest, how to drive down from Sydney, why spring suits walking and swimming, and the whales, seals and local festivals worth timing your trip around.
When Is the NSW South Coast Quietest?
The busy weeks follow the NSW school calendar. Beyond the long summer break, the spring school holidays run from 28 September to 9 October 2026, so the first part of October isn’t as quiet as it looks on paper. All dates here were checked in November 2026.
For the best mix of space and wildlife, aim for mid-October to the end of November. The whale migration is still under way, the summer crowds haven’t arrived, and you won’t be fighting families for a campsite.

School holiday days count calendar days inside the official NSW Eastern division dates (28 September to 9 October 2026, 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027). Montague Island is closed during August.

If you can only travel in summer, early December is your best bet. Book ahead for anything after 18 December, because caravan parks and holiday rentals along the coast fill quickly once the schools break up.
How Do You Drive From Sydney to the South Coast?
It’s an easy drive. The Sydney to Batemans Bay road trip covers 275km and takes about four hours on the Princes Highway the whole way, with plenty of places to break it up.
| Stop, heading south | Rough driving time |
|---|---|
| Royal National Park | Early on, just south of Sydney |
| Wollongong | About 90 minutes from Sydney |
| Kiama | About 30 minutes past Wollongong |
| Berry | About 20 minutes past Kiama |
| Nowra, then Milton | Through the Shoalhaven |
| Ulladulla | Last big stop before Batemans Bay |
If you’re flying into Sydney first, our 24-hour Sydney stopover itinerary covers a day in the city before you collect the car, and our guide to Sydney Harbour Bridge climb options and costs helps if you fancy one big activity before leaving. There’s also a longer inland option: head down the Hume Highway and cut across to the coast via Braidwood on the Kings Highway. It adds time, but the heritage town of Braidwood makes a decent lunch stop if you’re in no rush.
Why Visit the NSW South Coast in Spring?
Spring gives you mild days for walking and a sea that’s warming up. On the Eurobodalla coast around Batemans Bay and Narooma, quieter coastal escapes before the summer crowds come with water temperatures above 18°C from spring to early autumn, so a swim is realistic from late spring onwards.
It’s also the best season for coastal walks. The Bingi Dreaming Track in Eurobodalla National Park is at its best in spring, when coastal banksias and other wildflowers are out. It’s 13.5km one way and takes four to six hours, with short steep hills, so it suits walkers with some bushwalking experience.
What Wildlife Can You See on the South Coast in Spring?
Whales are the headline act. The annual migration passes the coast from May to November, which makes the Eurobodalla coastline a top whale watching spot, with lookouts such as Snapper Point in Murramarang National Park and Mystery Bay in Eurobodalla National Park. Spring is when whales head south on the return leg.
Barunguba (Montague Island), about 9km off Narooma, is the other big draw. NSW National Parks recommends late winter to early December for its seals and birdwatching, and more than 90 bird species have been recorded on the island.
| Wildlife | Where to see it | When |
|---|---|---|
| Humpback and southern right whales | Headland lookouts and boat tours | May to November, with the southern leg in spring |
| Fur seals | Barunguba (Montague Island) by boat tour | Late winter to early December |
| Seabirds | Barunguba (Montague Island) | Late winter to early December; 19 species nest over summer |
| Little penguins | Evening tours to Barunguba | Summer only |
| Coastal wildflowers | Bingi Dreaming Track | Spring |
You can only reach Montague Island on a tour with an operator contracted by NSW National Parks. The minimum age is five, and the reserve closes for the whole of August, so don’t build a late-winter trip around it.
Which Spring Events Are Worth Planning Around?
Two late-September events bring out the locals. The Tilba Festival 2026 is on Saturday 26 September in the heritage village of Central Tilba, with music, food and games on Bate Street. General admission is A$20, and a family pass for two adults and two children is A$50.
River of Art, the Eurobodalla’s long-running arts festival, is scaled back in 2026 while the event is reviewed. The arts trail is paused, but the River of Art Prize exhibition still runs from 25 September to 5 October at the new Narooma Arts Centre.
Both dates overlap the start of the spring school holidays, so book accommodation early if you’re going for either. Stay on into mid-October and the coast quietens down again while the whales are still passing.
