Five-Day Cairns Itinerary For Reef, Rainforest, And City Activities

Cairns Esplanade - Nearby Lagoonl: The tropical scenery in northern Queensland city Cairns

If you have five days in Cairns, the trick is giving the reef, the rainforest and the city one proper day each and leaving a spare day for the weather. This five-day Cairns itinerary uses published travel times: Green Island is about 45 minutes by catamaran, and the Daintree is a 2.5 hour drive to Cape Tribulation.

Below you get a day-by-day plan covering the city and Esplanade, a Green Island and Outer Reef day, the Daintree, Kuranda by cableway and train, and a flexible final day.

Schedules and operating status change, so confirm times with each operator before you book. Plan the longer excursions on days two to four and keep the weekend free if you want Rusty’s Markets, which sources list as open Friday to Sunday.

Day 1: Cairns Esplanade and the City Centre

Use the first day to settle in, since the airport is only around 5 to 7 km from the centre, roughly 8 to 10 minutes by car. Walk the 2.5 km Esplanade boardwalk, which has free barbecue facilities and gym equipment along the foreshore.

The Esplanade Lagoon is free and lifeguard patrolled, and it usually closes for cleaning on Wednesday mornings, so check the signs before you plan a swim around it. It makes an easy late-afternoon stop after a flight.

Book somewhere central so that the Reef Fleet Terminal, restaurants and the Esplanade are all walkable.

Day 2: Green Island and Great Barrier Reef Day Trip

This is the reef day and Green Island and Outer Reef has check-in starting at 7.30am at the Reef Fleet Terminal, departure at 8.30am and arrival at Green Island at 9.15am, with about two hours of free time on the island.

The boat then continues to an Outer Reef platform for around three hours, returning to Cairns at about 5.30pm. Expect an 8 to 9 hour day, so keep the evening easy.

If that is too long, the Green Island ferry runs shorter trips, with a published crossing time of about 45 minutes in good weather. Weather can change transfers, which is one reason day five stays flexible.

Pack reef-safe sun protection, a rash vest and a towel before you board.

If you are still choosing where to base yourself for the reef, our guide to the nearest airport to the Great Barrier Reef compares the arrival points.

Day 3: Daintree Rainforest From Cairns

Cairns to Port Douglas takes around 60 minutes by road, and the full run to Cape Tribulation is about 140 km, or roughly 2.5 hours. That makes the Daintree a full day whether you drive yourself or join a guided tour.

There is no real public transport to the Daintree coast, so you need a hire car or a tour. Guided full-day tours that include a Daintree River cruise, a cable ferry crossing and Mossman Gorge are listed as returning to Cairns around 6.30pm.

Self-drivers cross the Daintree River by cable ferry. The ferry can occasionally close because of flooding or extreme low tides, so check its status that morning. Daintree National Park entry is free.

Day 4: Kuranda by Skyrail and Scenic Railway

The classic Kuranda day uses both ways up: one direction by the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and the other by the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Take the cableway one way and the train the other.

The cableway is about 7.5 km long and takes about 90 minutes one way, with stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls stations. The railway climbs through 15 tunnels and over 37 bridges, and a typical tour timetable has the train leaving Freshwater station at 8.50am and reaching Kuranda at 10.20am.

Full-day packages with transfers run roughly 7 to 8 hours and leave a few hours free in Kuranda village. Check the cableway’s current operating status first, because one listing mentions maintenance periods when guests are driven to Kuranda by road.

Day 5: Botanic Gardens, Markets or a Weather Back-Up

Use the last day for whatever the week pushed aside. The Botanic Gardens are free, with boardwalks through melaleuca forest, and the Red Arrow and Blue Arrow tracks behind the gardens give views over the city and coast.

If cloud or rough water cancelled a reef or Daintree trip, rebook it for this day. If your flight is mid-afternoon, a swim at the Lagoon and a final walk along the boardwalk is enough.

Five days fits one reef trip, one Daintree day, one Kuranda day and two lighter city days, with a spare day built in for weather changes.

Which Day Should I Visit the Markets?

Rusty’s Markets are listed as running Friday to Sunday, so swap the Day 5 plan to land on a weekend if the markets matter to you. Confirm opening hours locally before you go.
