The Office for National Statistics has released its latest crime figures for England and Wales, showing that police recorded around 5.2 million crimes in the year ending March 2026, excluding fraud and computer misuse.
The new data covers all 43 Police Force Areas and includes updated figures for violence, burglary, vehicle offences, shoplifting, robbery, sexual offences, drug offences and criminal damage. Nationally, recorded crime fell by around 1% compared with the previous year, although the picture varies considerably depending on where you live and the type of crime being measured.

Police-recorded crime does not capture every offence and can be affected by reporting levels, recording practices and police activity. However, it remains the main official source for comparing recorded crime across local police force areas.

- ⚖️ Homicide: Homicides fell by 7% to 499 offences, the lowest total since current recording practices began in 2003.

- 🔫 Firearms offences: Police recorded 5,151 firearms offences, an 8% decrease from the previous year.
- 🏠 Burglary: Recorded burglary fell by 9% to 223,456 offences.
- 🚗 Vehicle crime: Vehicle offences decreased by 11% to 312,250.
- 🛒 Shoplifting: Shoplifting fell by 4% to 507,086 recorded offences following several years of increases.
- 👊 Robbery: Robbery of personal property fell by 9%, although total recorded robbery rose by 10% because of changes to business robbery recording.
- 🚨 Sexual offences: Police-recorded sexual offences increased by 4% to 217,567.
- 💳 Fraud: The Crime Survey estimated 4.5 million fraud incidents, while the number of fraud victims rose by 10% to approximately 3.8 million people.
- 🏘️ Anti-social behaviour: An estimated 40.9% of adults experienced or witnessed anti-social behaviour, up from 35.5% the previous year.
