Bay Area commuters who mix cycling with public transit are getting extra support this week as Caltrain joins regional celebrations for Bike to Wherever Days from May 14 through May 16.

The rail operator is teaming up with the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition to welcome riders with pop-up “energizer stations” at several stations along the Peninsula corridor.

Free Snacks and Giveaways for Cyclists

Travelers passing through stations in San Francisco, Millbrae, San Mateo, and Mountain View can expect:

  • Free snacks and fruit
  • Water stations for riders
  • Giveaways and cycling swag
  • Transit-adjacent support stations during commute hours

The initiative is part of National Bike Month and is designed to encourage more residents to combine biking with public transportation.

Bikes Are Becoming a Bigger Part of Bay Area Transit

According to Caltrain, about 20% of passengers already use bicycles to access the rail system, making bikes one of the most popular first-and-last-mile transportation options between San Francisco and San Jose.

While Caltrain offers one of the country’s largest onboard bike capacities for a commuter rail service, officials say bike cars can still fill up quickly during busy commute periods and special events.

Alternatives to Bringing Bikes Onboard

Passengers who do not need their bikes at both ends of the trip are being encouraged to use station bike parking instead.

Available options include:

  • BikeLink electronic lockers
  • Free bike valet service near Townsend Street in San Francisco
  • Large-capacity lockers for cargo and family bikes

More than 600 BikeLink eLockers are currently available across 25 Caltrain stations.

BikeLocker Pricing

  • Standard lockers: 5 cents per hour
  • Larger bike lockers: 8 cents per hour
  • First-time users receive 100 free parking hours through the BikeLink app

New Platform Markings Aim to Speed Up Boarding

Caltrain has also added new platform stencils showing riders exactly where bike car doors will stop.

The updated markings are intended to:

  • Reduce platform crowding
  • Help cyclists board faster
  • Improve station accessibility for all passengers

Why It Matters for Travelers

Bike-friendly transit has become a growing focus for cities trying to reduce traffic congestion and improve regional mobility. Events like Bike to Wherever Days are increasingly aimed not just at commuters, but also:

  • Hybrid workers
  • Students
  • Weekend travelers
  • Recreational cyclists
  • Visitors exploring the Bay Area without a car

Originally known as Bike to Work Day, the annual event has expanded into a broader push encouraging people to use bicycles for everyday trips beyond the traditional office commute.
