If you are flying in for a ski week, the trip from Geneva to Tignes and the village you sleep in shape the holiday as much as the snow does. The resort’s 2026 to 2027 winter season runs from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, so there’s a long window to plan around, and the best-placed rooms go first.

Here’s how the Tignes villages compare, the four main ways to get there from Geneva Airport, and what a private transfer costs per person.

Getting From Geneva to Tignes

The easiest way to reach Tignes with skis is a door-to-door transfer, and operators such as French Alpina Transfers list the road trip from Geneva Airport at about 180 km and just under three hours, via Annecy, Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Cheaper options exist, but every one of them involves either a timetable or a change of vehicle with your bags.

Where to Stay in Tignes: Which Village Suits You?

Tignes is a cluster of villages at two levels. The tourist office splits it into Tignes 2100, Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières at 1,550 m, and the 2,100 m level is three neighbourhoods with quite different moods.

VillageAltitudeThe feelSuits
Le Lac2,100 mThe centre: shops, restaurants and the Lagon aquatic centreFirst-timers who want everything on the doorstep
Le Lavachet2,100 mQuieter, with lifts reachable on skisFamilies and early nights
Val Claret2,100 mLively and sporty, with the busiest nightlifeStrong skiers and après fans
Tignes 1800Not publishedVillage style, with a beginner zoneFamilies with young children
Les Brévières1,550 mTraditional chalets beside the dam, linked to Tignes 1800Anyone after an older, quieter base

For the type of room, Tignes has three to five-star hotels, apartments in serviced residences or through letting agents, chalets and guest rooms, plus all-inclusive clubs that bundle meals, lift passes and kit hire. Apartments are usually the best value for a group that will cook, while a catered chalet or half-board hotel takes dinner off your hands after a long day.

How to Get From Geneva Airport to Tignes

Shared Shuttles

Several coach companies run winter shuttles from Geneva, and the Tignes tourist office list of airport shuttle operators is the place to start. You pay per seat, which makes this the cheapest door-to-resort option for one or two people. The trade-off is a fixed departure, so a delayed flight can mean a long wait, and fares often include only one or two hold bags. Check the ski bag allowance before you book.

Train and Bus

Tignes has no railway station. Geneva Airport does, and the fastest trains to Bourg-Saint-Maurice take about 3 hours 50 minutes, with two changes on average. At the station, the S83 bus or a taxi climbs the last stretch to Tignes. It’s a fine option with a backpack. With skis, boots and a family’s worth of luggage, three changes is a lot of lifting.

Car Hire

A hire car gives you freedom in the valley, but the mountain rules apply. In Haute-Savoie, which you cross from Geneva, cars must carry chains or snow socks, or run on four winter tyres, from 1 November to 31 March. The final D902 climb from Bourg-Saint-Maurice is where snow lingers, and Tignes car parks are paid in winter and can be booked in advance. Ask the rental desk exactly which winter kit is in the car before you leave the airport.

Private Transfers

For anyone travelling with ski luggage, a private transfer is the least hassle: the driver meets you at arrivals, loads the bags once and unloads them at your accommodation, with no platforms or bus stops in between. It also works around your flight time.

The catch is the price, which is per vehicle. The operator above lists €460 in the daytime and €490 at night or at weekends for up to eight passengers, so it’s dear for a couple and good value for a full car. Confirm how many ski bags fit before you book.

Pick your arrival time and group size to see what that works out at per person.

Tips for Booking Your Tignes Trip

  1. Book your village first, because school holiday weeks fill early and your base decides your transfer drop-off point.
  2. Book the transfer once your flights are fixed, because shuttle departures and private pickups are timed to arrivals.
  3. Check your airline’s ski bag fee, because carrying your own kit only pays off if the transfer can take it. Our ski trip packing list covers the hire-or-bring decision.
  4. Sort winter sports cover, because standard policies don’t always include skiing. Our explainer on what travel insurance covers is a wee primer before you buy.
