Airbnb wants to book all of your travel inside its own app, and it plans to do it with AI agents. On the company’s third quarter earnings call, CEO Brian Chesky said specialized AI agents will handle every vertical in travel, which answers years of speculation about whether Airbnb would add flights.
The first of those agents is due sooner than the broader goal. Airbnb’s shareholder letter says a specialised AI agent will reach guests in the first half of 2027, while Chesky declined to give a timeline for the full plan.
What Airbnb Says the Agents Will Do
Airbnb intends to connect its agents to many travel partners so guests can book a wider range of trips without leaving the app. Car rentals show the current gap: the CarTrawler partnership is a link off, which sends users to another site to finish the booking. Native integrations would keep that booking inside Airbnb.
Keeping it in the app gives Airbnb a larger share of the revenue and more control over customer service. Chesky said the company will sign many partnerships to reach that scale, a change for a business that grew for years mostly without them.
Why Chesky Backs Specialized Agents
Chesky argued that agents built for a single purpose will outperform general-purpose ones. That view fits the approach he set out at an industry event in September, when he said Airbnb would launch its own agent and that the interface would be much richer than a chatbot. His words there were: “Next year we will launch our agent.”
How the Timeline Has Moved
That September promise was firmer than what he had said a few weeks before it. Around two weeks before that September forum, Chesky told Goldman Sachs that Airbnb was still piloting richer AI interfaces and said, “I don’t know if we’ll be the one to do it.”
On the August earnings call he had said that within roughly 12 to 18 months, travellers could make a broad request, such as planning a family trip to Europe, and have the platform help assemble it.
What Happens Next
The first test is the specialised agent promised for the first half of 2027. Partnership announcements would show how quickly Airbnb can move bookings such as car rentals from outbound links to native checkout. Until then, nothing changes for you: car hire through Airbnb still sends you to another site to finish the booking.
