United Airlines has officially restarted direct daily flights between Glasgow and the New York area, restoring a major transatlantic connection that disappeared from Scotland’s largest city in 2019.
The airline celebrated the launch of the revived route this week as the first inbound flight arrived at Glasgow Airport from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
Daily Flights Return Between Glasgow and New York
The service will operate every day throughout the summer and autumn season, giving travellers on Scotland’s west coast another direct option for reaching the United States without connecting through London or Europe.
The route marks the first scheduled service operated by a US airline between Glasgow and the United States since 2019.
- Flights depart Glasgow daily at 2pm
- Arrival into the New York area is scheduled for 4.35pm local time
- Return flights leave Newark at 10.15pm
- Passengers land back in Glasgow the following morning at 10.10am
The route was initially expected to end in September, but strong booking demand led United Airlines to extend operations until October 24.
That extension also means a significant increase in available seats compared with the airline’s original seasonal schedule.

Why the Route Matters for Scotland
The return of the Glasgow-Newark connection is expected to benefit both tourism and business travel.
For Scottish travellers, the route creates easier access to New York City as well as hundreds of onward destinations across North and South America through United’s wider network.
Meanwhile, inbound visitors from the United States will have another direct gateway into Scotland, making it easier to explore Glasgow and continue onward into the Highlands and other regions.
- Tourism leaders expect increased US visitor numbers
- The route supports business travel and international investment
- Scottish exports including whisky and seafood could also benefit
- Passengers gain easier onward connections across North America
United Airlines already operates several Scotland-US routes from Edinburgh, including flights to Newark, Washington D.C., and Chicago O’Hare, but the Glasgow service restores an important long-haul option for the west of Scotland.
Glasgow Airport Eyes International Growth
Airport officials described the return of the route as a major milestone during a period of wider investment and expansion at Glasgow Airport.
The restored New York connection had previously been one of Glasgow Airport’s most popular long-haul services before it was suspended several years ago.
City leaders also welcomed the launch, saying the direct route strengthens Glasgow’s international links while helping attract more visitors, investment, and economic activity.
For travellers planning autumn trips to the US, the restored service offers a more convenient alternative to connecting flights while bringing one of Scotland’s most important transatlantic routes back onto departure boards.
