Combine a visit to Inverness with a trip to Loch Ness, one of the most famous lochs in Scotland. Boat tours run regularly and there are plenty of scenic viewpoints along the shoreline where you can take in the scale of the water and the surrounding Highlands. During my visit, I took a boat cruise on the loch, which was a great way to experience the landscape from the water.
Being out on the loch really gives you a sense of how large and deep it is, and the surrounding Highland scenery looks even more dramatic from the boat. The guides usually share stories about the history of the area as well as the legend of the famous Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as “Nessie.” While you are there, it is worth stopping at the ruins of Urquhart Castle.
The castle sits right on the edge of the loch and offers some of the best views across the water, making it one of the most photographed spots in the region. If you have time, consider driving part of the Loch Ness 360° Trail, which circles the loch and passes through forests, small villages and peaceful viewpoints. It is a great way to explore beyond the main stops and experience more of the surrounding Highland scenery.
Speyside Whisky Region – Get Toasty!
